Hair Swirls
I think these are just the cutest things and can't wait until my daughters hair is long enough so she can wear them. The are designed to tie around a pony tail.

Bows!
These can be used for a variety of things, embellishing hats, a brooch or what I am doing is putting them on hair clips for my sister. I made her a couple last year to wear to work and she asked for more for her 22nd Birthday. I decided to write the pattern as I made them this time. They are slightly different than the first lot I made and I haven't attached them to clips yet but I will get photos of that when I do it.
Materials:
4.00 mm crochet hook
DK 8ply yarn
Any hook and yarn will work but that is what I used to get a bow that is 6 inches wide and 3 inches high.
Main part of bow:
Row 1: Ch 21, hdc in 3rd ch from the hook and across. Ch 2, turn. (20 hdc)
Row 2-7: Hdc across. Ch 2, turn. (20)
Do not ch 2 at the end of row 7. Ch 1, sc around putting 3 stitches in each corner to keep it even. Join to first sc with a sl st and finish off.
Weave in ends
Centre of bow:
Row 1: Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from the hook and across. Ch 1, turn. (4 sc)
Row 2-8: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. (4)
Do not turn at the end of row 8. Ch 1, sc around putting 3 stitches in each corner to keep it even. Join to first sc with a sl st and finish off leaving a long tail for sewing to your item or clip.
I fold the centre of the bow (wrong side together) in half and sew up the side.
These are the two pieces you should now have.
Pinch the 3 middle rows together and bring the sides in like the top picture. Wrap the centre of the bow around the main part and stitch the ends together to secure it. Now you have a bow which can be sewed onto anything.
And just because you need to see how far I have actually come in a year. Yes I have only been doing this for just over a year. I learned via Crafty Minx Crochet School.

Supplies
4mm and 3.5mm Hook
50g Dark Brown DK 8 ply
50g Pink DK 8 ply
(you probably won't even need that much)
Small amount of green and darker pink
Measuring tape
Stitch Marker
4mm hook
Do not join rounds, make sure you mark beginning with stitch marker
Round 1: Start with the magic circle (or chain ring), 8 sc into ring,
Round 2: 2 hdc in each stitch around (16)
Round 3: 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next stitch around (24)
Round 4: 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 2 stitches. (32)
Round 5: 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 3 stitches. (40)
Round 6: 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 4 stitches. (48)
Round 7-10: hdc around
Round 11: In FLO, *sc, hdc, dc in first stitch, dc, hdc, sc in next stitch, sk1* repeat around. Sl Stitch into gap under last st as this will give you a more pronounced shell. Finish off.
Round 12: Join pink yarn to back loop of round 11, Ch 2, dc around (48) Join in top of ch 2
Tip: I ended up with a gap between my first and last stitch so I did a dc decrease to close the gap.
Round 13-16: Ch 2, *FPDC in next st, dc in next stitch* continue around. Join (48)
Round 17: Ch1, sc around. Finish off. When weaving in the ends I sewed the icing shells to the cupcake bottom so they didn stick out.
Flower and leaves
3.5mm hook
http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/may-roses.html
I found it easier to sew the leaves onto the bottom of the flower and then sew the flower onto the hat
Sprinkles
Cut small pieces of darker pink yarn. Pull through yarn so you have 2 strand on the right side of the hat.
Tie as many knots for the size sprinkle you want.
Pull strands back to wrong side and make a double knot. Cut ends.

Crochet Dinosaur Hat/Photo Prop

Difficulty:
Beginner (Intermediate for size increase/decreases)
Materials:
4.5mm, 5mm crochet hooks
DK yarn. I used Crucci Olympus
Yarn Needle
Tape Measure
Scissors
Gauge:
15st = 4 inches in the round (not increase rounds),
The diameter of beginning circle (rounds 1-5) = 4.8 inches
Size: Pattern has been written for 3 Months but instructions are included to increase size.
To increase/decrease the size of the hat I have given a size chart which you can use for the hat or you can use your own measurements. Chart can be found here, http://knotyournanascrochet.blogspot.co.nz/2012/03/modified-pineapple-stitch-hat.html
For a 3 month size I made the circumference of my increase circle 15 inches (diameter 4.8 inches) A great calculator for this is here http://math.about.com/library/blcirclecalculator.htm. I made the length of the hat 5.5 - 6 inches and the length from the bottom of the hat to the bottom of the tail 12 inches.
So for a newborn I would increase to a circumference of 12 inches or 3.8 inches in diameter. I would make the length of the hat 5 inches and the length from the bottom of hat to the tail 10 inches.
For 6 months I would increase to a circumference of 17 inches or 5.4 inches in diameter. Length of hat would be 6.5 inches and the measurement from bottom of hat to tail 14 inches.
For the starting width of the tail I started with just under half of the st for the hat so for example for the 3 month hat I started with 22 st and gradually decreased to 8 st's over the 12 inches of the tail. You will have to use your initiative when it comes to the other sizes.
I hope this makes sense, if not feel free to leave a comment or email me directly at kuddlynkute@gmail.com and I will try and answer any questions you have. All I ask is that you remember I am providing this pattern for free so I have not put a lot of time into making sure it is correct for each size.

Row 28: Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in next 4, hdc2tog, hdc in last st (8) Ch1 turn
Finish by sc around tail and hat.
Make spikes, I did 8 for size 3 months. Great pattern for spikes here http://www.theboytrifecta.com/2011/01/dino-spike-crochet-pattern.html I used a 4.5mm crochet hook
I stuffed my spikes but you don't have to.
Weave in ends and sew spikes on and your done :)
Please let me know if you find mistakes and remember to post photos to ravelry.
The easiest way to sew the spikes on is to fold the hat directly in half, you can thread a different colour yarn up the length of it to make it easier to place them. Then pin them on and sew them on with the yarn from the spikes.

Size 7 (4.5mm) crochet hook or whatever you have
DK, 8ply Yarn or whatever you have
Yarn needle

Sizing:
Any as we will be working on measurements J
Note:
This hat is worked in the round. The first Ch 2 of each round counts as the first hdc. Make sure to join each round with a sl st in the top of the first Ch 2. A video for the magic loop method can be found here: http://www.craftyminx.com/2011/10/crochet-school-lesson-16-working-in-the-round-1.html.
Here is a chart with measurements. You should increase until the Circumference is the same measurement as the size you are aiming for.
Hat height with brim allows the hat to be turned up about 1”
Hat circ should be 1 to 1 ½” smaller than the head circ

Modified Pineapple Stitch (MPS) – Draw yarn through same sp as the last stitch in the previous cluster, draw through next 2 st, pull through all 4 loops on hook, chain 1 to close cluster.
Basically it is a 3sctog but the first loop is pulled through the same stitch as the last stitch in the previous cluster. The picture below shows the antique pineapple stitch, what we are doing differently is we are not missing a stitch but going into the stitch on top of the “V” in the picture (in between the last loop and middle loop). This will give it a "W" look instead.

Source: Woolco Knitting & Crocheting Manual
These are the circumferences I ended up with using a 4.5mm hook and DK yarn
Starting with 10 hdc
Round 3 = 7” 18cm
Round 4 = 10” 25.5cm
Round 5 = 12.5” 32cm
Round 6 = 14.5 37cm
Round 7 = 16.5 42cm
Increases about 2” each round
Starting with 12 hdc
Round 3 = 8.5” 22cm
Round 4 = 11” 28cm
Round 5 = 13.5” 35.5cm
Round 6 = 16” 41cm
Round 7= 18.5’ 47 cm
So each round is increasing 2.5”
Above is an example of how changing the number of st you start with can adjust the size of your increase circle.
Obviously if you are using yarn with a different weight or a different hook size your measurements will be different. Changing hook size can help with getting the correct size increase circle for the top of hat. Because everyone crochets with a different tension your measurements may end up being way off. That is why I have suggested using measurements rather than following an exact pattern.

Right lets start the pattern. You will stop when you feel your beanie is at the right circumference for the size you are making. A good tip is to measure each round. The MPS needs an even number of st to work.
Increase Rounds
Make a circle using the magic loop method or alternatively Ch 4 and join with a sl st in the first chain which will make a circle.
Round 1: Ch 2, (5, 7, 9,11 hdc in circle. (6, 8, 10, 12 hdc)
Round 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around. (12, 16, 20, 24 hdc)
Round 3: Ch 2, 2 hdc in next st, *Hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next* around.
Round 4: Ch 2, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st* around.
Round 5: Ch 2, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st*around.)
Round 6: Ch 2, hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st* around.
Round 7: Ch 2, hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st, * hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st* around.
Round 8: Ch 2, hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st, * hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc in next st* around.
Keep increasing until it is the correct size for the hat you intend to make, I am sure you should have the pattern by now.
MPS rounds
1. To begin. Ch 1, Draw loop up through same sp as ch1, pull loop through next 2 st, draw yarn through all 4 loops on hook.
*Draw yarn through same sp as the last stitch in the previous cluster, draw through next 2 st, pull through all 4 loops on hook, chain 1 to close cluster.* Repeat until round is completed. Join with sl st in first stitch of round.
Start at 1 again.
Please let me know if you are having touble with this.
You will know if you have done something wrong as the MPS’s won’t line up.
Continue until piece is 1 ½ - 2 inches from the hat height without brim measurement for the size you are making. So for example you are making newborn size. You will to MPS rows until hat measures 3 - 4.5” from the crown of the hat (where you did your magic circle)
Hat brim
This can be done 2 different ways.
1. You can hdc 5-6 rows around or until hat measures the hat height without brim measurement for the size you are making. So for example a newborn hat you would hdc around until the hat measures 4.5” - 6” from the crown of the hat (where you did your magic circle)
2. You can add a flap which you can button down after (see photos). To do this finish off after your MPS rows. Lay hat flat with the joining seam down the side of the hat, attach yarn about 3 inches from the right side of the hat (really comes down to personal preference, Ch until the flap is the length you want it. Ch another 2. Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook, hdc around until you reach the beginning. Instead of joining ch1, turn. Continue doing this until hat measures the hat height without brim measurement for the size you are making. So for example a newborn hat you would hdc rows until the hat measures 4.5” - 6” from the crown of the hat (where you did your magic circle).
Now you can add buttons, a great tutorial for making buttons holes can be found here (yes it is a diaper cover but Clare does and awesome job of explaining how to do it) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eRaGsoScnw&feature=relmfu you will find it at about 12.30mins. So basically you would do this along the side of the flap part. Then just sew on your buttons and weave in your ends and your done! Easy as that.
Another option is just to sew the buttons though the flap and onto the hat as it is not like you will undo the buttons at all it is just for looks.
I hope it makes sense. I tried to make it so everyone would understand including beginners but I may have written too much for those that have been crocheting for awhile.
