Baby Hat

My neighbor asked if I could make a hat and booties set for her sister who has a baby on the way. Not knowing the sex was hard but this is what I came up with. The ribbing makes it a stretchy hat so should fit a newborn for awhile. The ribbing for this hat was inspired by Busting Stitches Ribbed Hat  So if you are looking for a hat with single ribbing instead of double head over there :) She also has bigger sizes available.

Crochet booties with strap: Free Pattern

Crochet Mary Janes Free Pattern

I had to change my sole due to an issue so instead of just making a new sole I decided to make a new bootie pattern. Enjoy.

This pattern has not been tested

NOTE: My patterns are free and I would like them to stay that way. You are free to print them out and pass them around but please make sure my blog address is somewhere on the pattern (http://knotyournanascrochet.blogspot.co.nz/) so that people know where the pattern originated.

Please do not sell my patterns or say they are your own. You are free to do whatever you want with the finished item. If you are selling them online please link back the pattern and give me credit. I took the time to write this pattern out so the least you can do is take the small amount of time it takes to give me credit.

Ruffle Hat (Diaper cover to come)

Crochet Ruffle Hat

(There is a hat under there, trust me :). I am hoping to eventually get some professional photos once I have made the diaper cover)

Newborn/3-6 Months

Materials

  • Ruffle yarn of your choice – I used Fabulous Fibres Meshio in pink and purple. I worked the two meshes together. Any other ruffle yarn will work like Redheart Sashay and it is not necessary to work two together. I only did that because I noticed the Meshio was quite thin and I wanted a fuller look.
  • DK/8ply yarn – I used Olympus by Crucci
  • 4.50 mm hook, 5.00 mm
  • Scissors
  • Cotton for sewing ruffle to hat and diaper cover
  • Tape Measure

Hat Pattern – with DK yarn

Use 4.50mm hook for newborn. Use 5.00mm hook for 3-6 months.
Ch 2 counts as the first hdc in each round, place another hdc into the same stitch at the beginning of each round

Starting with a magic circle or ch 3, join with a slip stitch.

Round 1: Ch 2, 11 hdc in circle. Join to top of ch 2 with a slip stitch. (12 hdc)

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around. Join to top of ch 2 with a slip stitch. (24 hdc)

Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in same st as ch 2, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next* around. Join to top of ch 2 with a slip stitch. (36 hdc)

Round 4: Ch 2, hdc in same st as ch 2, hdc in next 2 stitches, *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 2 st* around. Join to top of ch 2 with a slip stitch. (48 hdc)

The diameter of this circle should measure:

Newborn - 4 inches.
3-6 months – 4.5 inches
Adjust hook size accordingly.

Round 4- 12: Ch 2, hdc around. Join to top of ch 2 with a slip stitch. (48 hdc)
Hat height – 4.5 inches.

Finish off, weave in ends.

3-6 Months only

Round: 13-14: Ch 2, hdc around. Join to top of ch 2 with a slip stitch. (48 hdc)

Hat height – 5.5 inches

Finish off, Weave in ends.

Ruffles:

As mentioned before I used two together but you can just use one if using a thicker brand. Brands like Redheart Sashay will have a solid edge. This will be the bottom of your ruffle. You will be working into the top.

Tip: You may find it easier to wind your yarn flat around something before starting rather than doing it as you go.

How to use ruffle yarn – Insert hook into the 4th loop from the beginning. Pick up every second loop onto your hook until you have 10 loops on your hook. Turn your hook and pull the last loop through all the loops on the hook. Do this over and over again until you have enough to wrap around your hat To finish off, twist the end of the yarn and pull through the last loop on your hook.

A great video for this can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icgUxPI66KM&list=HL1353982206&feature=mh_lolz Thank you LeAnne Greene from L.A. Crochet on facebook for allowing me to use this video.

Sewing ruffles to hat:

Pin ruffles to the hat starting from the bottom up MAKE SURE TO KEEP COUNT OF YOUR PINS! Work in a spiral until you reach the top. Position ruffles so that the join is not showing.

Supplies

4mm and 3.5mm Hook
50g Dark Brown DK 8 ply

(you probably won't even need that much)
Small amount of green and darker pink
Measuring tape

Round 1: Start with the magic circle (or chain ring), 8 sc into ring,

Round 7-10: hdc around
Round 11: In FLO, *sc, hdc, dc in first stitch, dc, hdc, sc in next stitch, sk1* repeat around. Sl Stitch into gap under last st as this will give you a more pronounced shell. Finish off.

Round 12: Join pink yarn to back loop of round 11, Ch 2, dc around (48) Join in top of ch 2
Tip: I ended up with a gap between my first and last stitch so I did a dc decrease to close the gap.
Round 13-16: Ch 2, *FPDC in next st, dc in next stitch* continue around. Join (48)
Round 17: Ch1, sc around. Finish off. When weaving in the ends I sewed the icing shells to the cupcake bottom so they didn stick out.

Flower and leaves
3.5mm hook

http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/may-roses.html

I found it easier to sew the leaves onto the bottom of the flower and then sew the flower onto the hat

Sprinkles

Cut small pieces of darker pink yarn. Pull through yarn so you have 2 strand on the right side of the hat.
Crochet Cupcake Hat

Tie as many knots for the size sprinkle you want.

Crochet Cupcake Hat

Pull strands back to wrong side and make a double knot. Cut ends.

I took the time to write this pattern out so the least you can do is take the small amount of time it takes to give me credit.

Difficulty:
Beginner (Intermediate for size increase/decreases)

Materials:
 4.5mm, 5mm crochet hooks
DK yarn. I used Crucci Olympus
Yarn Needle
Tape Measure
Scissors

Gauge:
15st = 4 inches in the round (not increase rounds),
The diameter of beginning circle (rounds 1-5) = 4.8 inches

Size: Pattern has been written for 3 Months but instructions are included to increase size.

To increase/decrease the size of the hat I have given a size chart which you can use for the hat or you can use your own measurements. Chart can be found here, http://knotyournanascrochet.blogspot.co.nz/2012/03/modified-pineapple-stitch-hat.html

For a 3 month size I made the circumference of my increase circle 15 inches (diameter 4.8 inches) A great calculator for this is here http://math.about.com/library/blcirclecalculator.htm. I made the length of the hat 5.5 - 6 inches and the length from the bottom of the hat to the bottom of the tail 12 inches.

So for a newborn I would increase to a circumference of 12 inches or 3.8 inches in diameter. I would make the length of the hat 5 inches and the length from the bottom of hat to the tail 10 inches.

For 6 months I would increase to a circumference of 17 inches or 5.4 inches in diameter. Length of hat would be 6.5 inches and the measurement from bottom of hat to tail 14 inches.

For the starting width of the tail I started with just under half of the st for the hat so for example for the 3 month hat I started with 22 st and gradually decreased to 8 st's over the 12 inches of the tail. You will have to use your initiative when it comes to the other sizes.

I hope this makes sense, if not feel free to leave a comment or email me directly at kuddlynkute@gmail.com and I will try and answer any questions you have. All I ask is that you remember I am providing this pattern for free so I have not put a lot of time into making sure it is correct for each size.

Row 2-3: Ch 2 turn, hdc across (22 st)
Row 4: Ch 2 turn, hdc2tog, hdc in next 16 st's, hdc2tog, hdc in last st (20)

Row 28: Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in next 4, hdc2tog, hdc in last st (8) Ch1 turn

Finish by sc around tail and hat.

Make spikes, I did 8 for size 3 months. Great pattern for spikes here http://www.theboytrifecta.com/2011/01/dino-spike-crochet-pattern.html I used a 4.5mm crochet hook

I stuffed my spikes but you don't have to.

Weave in ends and sew spikes on and your done :)

Please let me know if you find mistakes and remember to post photos to ravelry.

The easiest way to sew the spikes on is to fold the hat directly in half, you can thread a different colour yarn up the length of it to make it easier to place them. Then pin them on and sew them on with the yarn from the spikes.
