  1. Hi! I'm a beginner in crochet and I'm making these booties for a friends newborn. I'm having trouble with the booties coming out the same each time(I'm sure it's due to my skill level). But I had a question about the directions for the sides, starting in round 4. It says "working in back loop only". Does that mean from that point on or only for the slip stitch? I think I tried one way and then the other and that's why they look so different.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi there,

      It means from that point on. Just for that row though. It will help the sides turn out from the sole of the shoe. Hope that helps.

  2. When starting row 4 on the beginning bootie, do I count the chain two as the first hdc or do I hdc into the same stitch as the chain and count that as my first stitch? In other words are you counting the chain two as the first stitch or not counting it in the stitch count?

    1. Hi there,

      Yes the chain 2 counts as the first stitch so is included in the stitch count of 40 for that round.

  3. Another question on Row 5: If I have 40 sts and I use 3 for the first three sts (1 fphdc and 2 bphdc in next 2sts) how can I possibly come out even at the end with the 2 fphdc and 2 bphdc from the star on? That leaves me 37 sts after the first 3 are used. It would have to be an even number left to come out right. Should I just end with one bphdc?

    1. Because the ch 2 counts as a hdc you will count it as a fphdc so really it will be 2 x fphdc, 2 x bphdc around.

  5. I don't think my last comment posted... I was wondering what the gauge should be, since these need to come out a specific size. Thanks!

  7. Trying to make my frist bootiies for my first grandchild;
    question regarding round 6: fphdc in next st ... does this mean that round 6 fphdc/bphdc would b on top of round 5 fphdc/bhpdc. Based on what I have done so far it seems that my first st start in the round 5 fphdc.
    Round 7: Is the BLO only for that line or all through the round.
    does the work<== mean anything ( sorry being new to crochet.) thanks for your help

  12. Anonymous, rows 10-14 that you just sc in, you will sc in the ENDS of those rows to make the button hole.

  13. Down the sides of each of those rows

  15. I am a long-time crocheter, but this is my first attempt at booties. At the end of rounds 9-14, do you ss before the beginning of the next round?

    1. Rounds 9-14 make the strap so it is not joined, you are now working in rows.
