Punk Baby Hat with Skull Applique

Crochet-pattern-newborn-beanie-skull-applique

Materials:

5.0 mm crochet hook
DK or Light WW yarn in black, grey and white
Scissors
Yarn needle

Gauge: First 2 rounds of hdc should measure 2 inches.

THIS PATTERN IS WRITTEN IN US TERMS. IF YOU NEED HELP CONVERTING STITCHES TO UK TERMS PLEASE SEE THIS CHART THAT ALSO PROVIDES LINKS TO VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO COMPLETE THE BASIC STITCHES.  IF YOU NEED MORE ADVANCED INSTRUCTIONS PLEASE SEARCH YOUTUBE OR GOOGLE THE STITCH

Notes: You will be changing colours each round. Ch 2 counts as a hdc throughout pattern. If you cannot to the reverse sc then you can just do a normal sc round for the last round.

This is how I do my colour changes: When it says join to top of ch 2 with a sl st instead of pulling through the colour you are using pull through the next colour. Do not cut the first colour. So we will start with black, join grey where it says to join with a sl st, work a round with grey and pick up black again for the 3rd round. Each color will run up the inside of the hat.

Hat:

With black
Starting with a magic circle or ch 3 and join with a slip stitch.

Round 1: Ch 2, 11 hdc in circle. Join to the top of ch 2 with a sl st (12 hdc)

Change to grey

Round 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st as ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around. Join to the top of ch 2 with a sl st (24 hdc)

Change to black

Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in same st as ch 2, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next* around. Join to the top of ch 2 with a sl st (36 hdc)

Change to grey

Round 4: Ch 2, hdc in same st as ch 2, hdc in next 2 stitches, *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 2 st* around. Join to the top of ch 2 with a sl st (48 hdc)

Round 5-11: Continue alternating black and grey. Ch 2, hdc in each stitch around. (48 hdc)

Round 12: With grey, ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1, sc in each stitch around. (48 sc)

Change to black,

Round 13: Ch 1, reverse sc around (crab stitch)

Finish off and weave in all ends.

Skull Applique

Ch 1, do not turn. Place a sl st in end of row 1. Sl st in next 2 st, ch 5, (3 hdc, ch 1, 3 hdc) in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in next 3 ch. Sl st into same st ch 5 came out of.

Sl st in next 4, ch 5, (3 hdc, ch 1, 3 hdc) in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in next 3 ch. Sl st into same st ch 5 came out of.

Sl st in next 9, ch 5, (3 hdc, ch 1, 3 hdc) in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in next 3 ch. Sl st into same st ch 5 came out of.

Sl st in next 4, ch 5, (3 hdc, ch 1, 3 hdc) in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in next 3 ch. Sl st into same st ch 5 came out of.

Sl st in next 6 st, join to first sl st with a sl st and finish off leaving a tail for sewing.

Note: Bones may not look like bones until you sew them onto the item as you will have to close the hole made by placing the (3 hdc, ch1, 3 hdc).

Embroider eyes and mouth. Sew to hat or other item.

When doing the face, I started with the mouth, then did the nose and finally the eyes.

This pattern has not been tested so if you find any mistakes please let me know and I will fix them for others.

  2. About how large did your applique come out? Do you think it would work on a hat for an older child, about 6 years old?

    1. Sorry I didn't measure it and I no longer have the hat. I think it would work fine on a child size hat as well.
