I attempted to make these following a couple of patterns and failed miserably. I don't know if it was just me or if it was the patterns. For some reason I could not get the fronts to line up on either pattern. So after trying a couple of times I decided I would just write my own.
These are obviously inspired by the countless number of other patterns out there that I couldn't get my head around. Hopefully these will be a little less confusing for others to follow. I am going to try and keep colour changes to a minimum and try and get some photo's along the way. I don't know about you but I work better with visuals.
Now with video tutorial:
Materials
3.50 mm hook or size needed to get a 3.5" sole. Measure after round 4
DK Yarn - I used Olympus by Crucci
Scissors
Yarn needle
Tape Measure
3 stitch markers or scrap yarn
3 stitch markers or scrap yarn
0-3 months- fits 3.5'' foot
Pattern
THIS PATTERN IS WRITTEN IN US TERMS. IF YOU NEED HELP CONVERTING STITCHES TO UK TERMS PLEASE SEE THIS CHART THAT ALSO PROVIDES LINKS TO VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO COMPLETE THE BASIC STITCHES. IF YOU NEED MORE ADVANCED INSTRUCTIONS PLEASE SEARCH YOUTUBE OR GOOGLE THE STITCH.
Sole:
DO NOT JOIN, MARK EACH ROUND WITH A STITCH MARKER.
Round 1: Ch 9, work 2 sc into the 2nd chain from the hook. Sc in next 4 stitches. Hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in next. 6 hdc in last ch. Now working along the other side of the chain. 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next. Sc in next 4 stitches. 2 sc into the last ch. (24 stitches)
Round 2: 2 sc into the first stitch, 2 sc into next stitch, sc in next 6. 2 sc in next stitch, sc in next, 2 sc in each of the next 4 stitches. Sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next. sc in next 6. 2 sc into each of the last 2 stitches.. (34 sts)
Round 3: sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc into the next stitch. sc in next 11 stitches. Put 2 sc into each of the next 2 stitches. sc in the next 2 stitches. Put 2 sc into each of the next 2 stitches. sc in the next 11 stitches. 2 sc into the next stitch. Sc in next 2 stitches. (40)
Sides:
Round 4: Join to first sc with a sl st, working in back loop only. Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Join to first sc with with a sl st (40)
Round 4: Join to first sc with a sl st, working in back loop only. Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Join to first sc with with a sl st (40)
This is what you should have so far. See how the loop is in the middle? Make sure that is where your loop is.
We want to join grey here. There are two ways you can do this.
- Finish off and re join the grey yarn in the middle stitch
- When you go to join the round with a sl st, instead of pulling through the white, pull through the grey and continue with the next round. Pick up white again when you get to round 7.
Instead we are going to pull through grey |
Pull both grey end tight and the white that is still attached. Do not finish off with white. |
Round 6: with second colour (grey), ch 1, sc around. Join to first sc with a sl st and finish off.
Re join white using one of the above methods.
Round 7: Ch 1, sc around. Join to first sc with a sl st. Finish off. (40 + sl st loop = 41)
Something I done without realising that will help you with the pattern is when you are doing the sides and the toe I counted the loop that was made with the sl st as a stitch. So you will have 41 stitches at the end of round 7 and not 40 which will make the toe and sides add up correctly.
Due to some confusion here is a badly drawn stitch chart to show the placement of the toe stitches and the side stitches.
Mark the first stitch with a stitch marker. This is the stitch after the sl st join.
Count from (including) the stitch marker 14 stitches towards the front on either side and mark with a stitch marker.
Toe:
You should have 16 stitches for the front of the shoe. Start and finish where you placed your markers.
Join white in place marked by first stitch marker
Working in back loops only to make the ridge in the front.
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1, hdc in next stitch, hdc2tog 6 times, hdc in next, sc in next.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in next st, hdc2tog 3 times, hdc in next 2 st. (7 hdc)
Finish off with white
Tongue:
Join grey in the stitch shown
Row 1-8: Ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch 1 and in next 6. turn (7 sc)
Sides: with grey
Working in back loop only, join in stitch shown with orange marker.
It is the same stitch that the toe is in.
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch 1 and in next 26. (27 sc) (end in same stitch toe is in)
Now working in both loops
Row 2-3: Ch 1, turn. Sc in same stitch as ch 1 and in next 26. (27 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog twice, sc in next 19, sc2tog twice. (23 sc)
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 7, sc2tog, sc in nxt st, sc2tog, sc in nxt 7, sc2tog. (19 sc)
Row 6: Ch 1, turn. Sc across. (19 sc)
Row 7: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog, sc in next 5, sc2tog, sc, sc2tog, sc in next 5, sc2tog. (15 sc)
Row 8: Ch 1, sc across. Finish off
Laces: make 2
Ch 80, finish off.
Lace boots as shown in pic.
Just pull through stitches at the end of row 1, row 4 and row 8. It is easier to weave in the ends once you have pulled through the laces.
I have a few other baby booties patterns here:

Ribbed Baby Booties
You always do such lovely work. Thank you
ReplyDeleteThank you for this. I've had people ask me for these and I've always had to say 'nope, not doing that crazy pattern', but now I can say yes!
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome pattern, but I am having a bit of trouble with the toe part. The stiches do not come out correct according to the way the pattern is written. It only goes halfway across the front and it doesn't look like your pic. Any help with be great!
ReplyDeleteHi there,
DeleteSo you should be able to work over 16 stitches if you are reading the pattern correctly. You have 16 st to begin with right? So sc (1 st used), hdc (2 st used), hdc2tog 6 times (14 st used), hdc (15 st used) sc (16 st used). At the end of row 1 you should have used 16 stitches but have a total st count of 10 because we decreased by 6 st. I hope this helps
Ok,I've seen you answer this, but I'm still confused. When the sides are finished, there should be 41 (counting the loop)--got that. Then you say count 14 stitches down each side from the loop counting the first stitch--did that. then you say "there should be 16 stitches across the front"--there aren't--there's only 12. 14+14+12+1(loop)=41 14+14+16+1(loop)=45. what am I missing here??? I was so excited about this pattern because it's what I really wanted and, like you, I couldn't find. HELP!!!
DeleteSo I decided to try to go on with the directions for the toe--they work--so what I think really needs to happen is for you to NOT say "count 16 stitches", but say "count 12" because that's what there is left and that's what works for the following directions for the toe--just saying. :-)
DeleteHello, I love your high top converse baby booties...I just found out that my daughter is having a baby and she loved these shoes when she was younger...I had tried making these before and they just never turned out...then I found your's and I read what you wrote about the challenges you had and how you made your own...so I gave them a try and I love them...and so did my daughter...so thanks so much for sharing your pattern!
ReplyDeleteI too am having probs w/ the toe. I get the right results for the instruction, but THe toe doesn't look anything like the pictur you have. It doesn't lay down as in the picture shown in the "sides" instructions,. It looks like the pic of the front of the toe you show but the rows do not attach to the shoe???? help please
ReplyDeleteHi there, would you be able to send a couple of pictures to knotyournanascrochet@gmail.com and I will see if I can help you. Thanks
DeleteI am having this problem as well
DeleteHi, I made converse from your pattern! They look amazing. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! :) You could check them here: http://szydelkowiczowo.blogspot.de/2013/06/conversy-dla-niemowlaka.html
One is slightly bigger at the end (it has more than 15stiches, but who cares. I could fix it, probably, but the difference is not so noticable. ;)
They look great. Thank you for sharing :)
DeleteSo If You Have 14 Stitches On Each Side And 16 stitches In The Toe That is 44 Stitches Not 41...
ReplyDeleteHi there,
DeleteThe pattern is right. If you read it again I accidently included the sl st join in round 8 as a stitch so that makes 41. How you get this is some of the stitches are doubled up (eg 2 stitches in one stitch). I have added a chart to the pattern. Please excuse that it is badly drawn but it shows the stitch placement.
Now if you are counting the stitches combined between the sides and the front then yes you should have 44. But 41 is the stitch count for round 8.
Teri, hi and THANK YOU! Finally, the baby high top sneakers pattern that "I" can follow, read and crochet. I have seen and researched "too" many of these patterns only to fail at each attempt. I had already given up hope "UNTIL" I stumbled upon yours." THANK YOU","THANK YOU" &" THANK YOU" You have no idea how happy I am that you decided to share your pattern. God bless you! ;) I'm one happy hooker!
ReplyDeleteJust finished making these & I only learned to crochet last week! Thank you for sharing this pattern, I've had loads of great comments from my friends (after showing them when I'd finished one). All the other patterns I looked at to make similar were mind boggling! Well done you :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for making this pattern (and including pictures!). I was able to make a pair to go with a football themed set for a baby and it turned out so perfect. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteI am very confused! If there are 14 + 14 + 1 = 29 stitches around the back, how can there only be 27 stitches to work the sides of the shoe? HELP!
ReplyDeleteIf you have a look at the pattern you are including the middle stitch (the plus 1) in both sides when you are counting to place markers. So is is really 13 + 13 + 1 = 27. The diagram might be slightly confusing here as what I want you to do is count 14 stitches including the marker on each side so that the back and sides of your shoe are centered.
DeleteThank you so much for your lovely free patterns! I finished one shoe and found the pattern relatively easy to follow. I had to count very carefully and correct several of my own mistakes, but now that I finished the first one the second one will be easy! It turned out perfectly, although the smallest hook I own is 3.75 so it turned out to be more like for a 3-month old baby. No problem! My baby is coming in Sept so that will fit all winter long, yay! If I can figure out how to post pictures, I will! I also made your dino hat for a friend and it turned out adorable!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Teri for sharing your high-top bootie pattern. Your pattern, along with the pictures, made it very easy to follow. I have made 4 pairs now in various colours for friends babies. I can't wait to see the Mom's faces when I give them at their baby showers. I almost hate to give them away because they are so cute! Thanks again and well done......Diane Curtin
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for doing this pattern. I also have searched and found other patterns for these sneakers and I was unable to follow them. I was able to follow yours with ease.
ReplyDeleteThese are super cute and I was able to work up a pair in a quick snap! Awesome since I was hit with an invitation for a DOUBLE baby shower at work next week! In all seriousness, the pattern was spot on - Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pattern. Just found out that I am going to be an Auntie, so I want to make some for baby to be. These are so cute!
ReplyDeleteHelp! In following your directions, my loop is off to the side at the end of round 6 ..not in the middle back. However, I did frog it, did a ch1, turn, starting at row 4, and it turned out.
ReplyDeleteHi I am having a few problems with the side of the shoe. My back look is not ending up in the middle of the shoe and I have double checked my stitch count and have started over several times and it is still occurring. Any help or guidance you could provide me with would be greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteHi, I was having some trouble with the sides. My back look is not ending up directly in the middle, and I've double checked my stitch count & have also started over several times, yet I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any advice?
ReplyDeleteHi there,
DeleteAre you able to send me a picture? I just read over the pattern and I can't see where you would be going wrong as the pattern looks even.
Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 7, sc2tog, sc in nxt st, sc2tog, sc in nxt 7, sc2tog. (19 sc)
When you sc2tog in the beginning are you going into the same stitch as the ch 1 and then the next stitch?
The only thing I can think you might be doing it thinking the ch 1 counts as a stitch and starting in the second stitch instead.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS PATTERN! First one I have managed to do without frogging the whole thing! Xxx
ReplyDeleteNice pattern! Thanks for sharing it. I enjoyed creating these Converse. Pattern nicely written and easy to follow. Tks. again!!!!
ReplyDeleteNice pattern! Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed creating these Converse sneakers for my grand daughter. Well written and easy to follow. Tks again.

Can you help me? When doing the sole my loop always ends up off to one side instead of in the middle. Don't know what I am doing wrong....
ReplyDeleteHi there,
DeleteIf you could send me a picture I might have a better idea of what you are doing differently. knotyournanascrochet@gmail.com
I always have the same problem as Suebee (not just this pattern, I cannot get to grips with progressing in rows without it all going to pot (usually increasing stitches). I am confused at the end of row 4 - you do not join with a slip stich, correct? Then I'm confused at the start of Row 5 with the chain 1 and sc into the same stitch as ch1, have no idea how to find that stitch...will try searching YouTube, but is it right that you don't join at the end of row 4? I'm managed to blunder through making one and was hoping the second would come easier but still struggling :( The one I did make looks much "deeper" than the pics but the row count is right (I think!) so don't know what I've done wrong to make mine look like platform boots, lol!
ReplyDeleteHi Morag,
DeleteI am currently working on a video tutorial for these. My first one so hopefully it will turn out okay. When you ch 1 there should be a stitch directly below it. Place your first sc in that stitch. I have adjusted the pattern slightly and added a join at the end of round 4 and I have taken out one round of the sides which will hopefully prevent them looking like platform boots. While doing the tutorial I am adjusting a few things to hopefully make it easier to understand.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteYour pattern was so easy to follow! I was having trouble following another pattern for converse booties, and I'm so lucky I found yours. Thank you figuring out an easy way to do it and sharing it with everyone!
I love the way you work the sole! I didn't use the rest of the pattern though I mean to in the near future. I dislike the normal way of making the sole where you join and end up with the joined section deviating from center the more rounds you make. Your method keeps it clean and easy to follow. I've never seen anyone else tackle it this way. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Great way of doing the sole.
DeleteI cannot figure out which is row eight. I only read up to row seven in the instructions. Please help. At the beginning of the instructions.
ReplyDeleteHi there,
DeleteThere is no row 8. You finish off after row 7 and start on the toe and tongue and then go onto the sides.
I was wondering if you had any plans on making this pattern for larger sizes? Usually I can alter a pattern to make things larger, but I'm a beginner with slippers and don't really have any idea how to do it myself.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this pattern, I have manage to make one so far, but I noticed that the toe (stitches just under the tongue) are not connected to the sides. Is this correct? I have read over the pattern again and can't see where they are suppose to be joined to the sides but in your pics it's shows the stitches from toe to side. I can send a couple pics if you have a contact address. Thank you
ReplyDeleteYes that's correct. In my picture you are looking at row 1 of the toe. It covers 16 stitches so goes around the side which is what you can see. Then once you do row 2 and the tongue it will look like it is sitting up.
DeleteWhen you put the sides on this will fix that as you can push it down.
You are welcome to send me photo's at knotyournanascrochet@gmail.com
Well, I don't know WHAT HAPPENED, but thesecond bootie came out with 16, yep, SIXTEEN sts. between the markers! Just kuhhrayzee, man. Thought I would let you know that somehow, my fingers worked it out when I let them go, lol! Go figure! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the pattern, was so easy to follow only find the loop or hole to pass the lace is to small. How can i make it little bigger, Also how to make smaller for new born to 3 months high cut converse , and how to make nike ones, do you have a pattern for that too.I am so grateful to you i made one.Like many of your comments does not look like the picture. Sure nobody will know the difference if they do not crochet.
ReplyDeleteYou are probably crochetting too tight hence having troube passing lace through! Good luck
Deletethankyou for pattern for converse, easier to understand than others i tried.
ReplyDeleteI found you on You Tube but could not see the video very well so came here and I have just finished a pair of these for my soon to be born grandson.
ReplyDeleteThey turned out perfect !
Your tutorial is very good and easy to follow. Thank you so much for sharing it as Lauranne said very easy to understand compared to others.
Thank you xxx
Hi I been doing this for my business https://m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1495483957390741... but having a problem with get same size. Anything I can do differently to change that
ReplyDeletehow many stitches would you start out with for an adult size? My daughter LOVES these and I'm having difficulty figuring it out. :/ She wears ladies size 8. HELP PLEASE :)
ReplyDeleteOh I think I figured it out (toe 2 row) thanks!
ReplyDeleteHello: I would like to make the converse booties in a larger size for 6months 9 months can you post or send a larger size pattern or advise how many more stictches to add...I love them Thank you
ReplyDeleteHello! Thank you for sharing this pattern, i love it. But in the video you skipped row 2 and 3 of the sides, right? Can you help me understand it please? Thanks, Teresa
ReplyDeleteHi I haven't watched the video but row 2 & 3 might not of been included/edited in to the video but would of still been made, this usually happens when there is a row/round repeat.
DeleteHi, thank you for your work! I have a question about row 4.. In your video you go from row 3 to row 4, sl, ch1, sc 40. On the website pattern it's so, ch1' sc in the back st 40 and on the picture under it looks like you turned the work so the ugly side end up inside the shoe. Which one should I follow? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the patterns to this high tops, but the video had some glare and it was hard to really see in some parts . Do u have one that is more clear? thank you
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much for your pattern! I had tried another pattern out, and quite honestly threw my attempt in the trash - never done that before!
ReplyDeleteHere is a picture of my booties from YOUR pattern:

I've made lots of these converse Booties, and they are lush! Just wish I could upload some photos to show them off. Thank you for sharing your pattern 😀
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU for your easy to follow pattern. I too tried multiple patterns for this project and could not seem to grasp them! Yours is perfectly written and I love the photos (more of a visual learner) GREAT WORK!
ReplyDeleteThis pattern is so great! I ended up buying a pattern online for $5 for high top booties and it was just awful; hard to read, didn't even tell me what size hook, and no stitch count at the end of rows. I was about to design my own when I came across yours. What a life saver! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHI you skipped rows 2&3 in video was that because its new born ?
ReplyDeleteI went and frogged my rows back to 2 because I wanted to see from your video what it will look like with skipping row 3 and just do 1,2,4,5,6& 7 for the sides because I seen you skipped in your video because written pattern has row 2&3 twice .I like just going around once I skip as well looked better:)thank you for showing your patteren.
ReplyDeleteMade one last night. I did struggle a bit at the 16/14/14 part, but kept following her pictures & instructions l instructions & got it. My friend wanted these for her baby that's due in a few weeks. Thank you for the detailed pictures. I turned mine inside out when I was done.
