The Morepork is New Zealand's only surviving owl and has a very distinctive 'more-pork' call. As a child we used to climb trees in the evenings and copy the call.
In Maori tradition the Morepork is seen as a watchful guardian. The 'more-pork' call is thought to be a good sign, whereas the high pitched yelp call was thought to be a warning that there would be bad news coming.
