I attempted to make the newborn size following a couple of patterns and failed miserably. I don't know if it was just me or if it was the patterns. For some reason I could not get the fronts to line up on either pattern. So after trying a couple of times I decided I would just write my own.
After writing the newborn size I was asked to do the 6-12 month size so this is it.
These are obviously inspired by the countless number of other patterns out there that I couldn't get my head around. Hopefully these will be a little less confusing for others to follow. I am going to try and keep colour changes to a minimum and try and get some photo's along the way. I don't know about you but I work better with visuals.
These have not been tested so if you let me know if you find any mistakes that would be great.
The pictures shown are the newborn ones as I have only made 1 boot in the 6-12 month size so far and will probably not make another unless anyone is interested in buying them.
Materials
3.50 mm hook
DK Yarn
Scissors
Yarn needle
Tape Measure

Sole:
DO NOT JOIN, MARK EACH ROUND WITH A STITCH MARKER.
Round 1: Ch 14, work 2 sc into the 2nd chain from the hook. Sc in next 8 stitches. Hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next. 6 dc in last ch. Now working along the other side of the chain. 2 dc in next stitch, hdc in next 2 stitches. Sc in next 8 stitches. 2 sc into the last ch. (34 stitches)
Round 2: 2 hdc into the first stitch, 2 hdc into next stitch, hdc in next 11. 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next, 2 hdc in each of the next 4 stitches. hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in next. hdc in next 11. 2 hdc into each of the last 2 stitches.. (44 sts)
Round 3: hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 hdc into the next stitch. hdc in next 16 stitches. Put 2 hdc into each of the next 2 stitches. hdc in the next 2 stitches. Put 2 hdc into each of the next 2 stitches. hdc in the next 16 stitches. 2 hdc into the next stitch. hdc in next 2 stitches. (50)
Sides:
Round 4: Join to first hdc with a sl st, working in back loop only. Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Join with to first sc with a sl st through both loops. (50)
Round 4: Join to first hdc with a sl st, working in back loop only. Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Join with to first sc with a sl st through both loops. (50)
Round 6: Ch 1, Sc around. Join to first sc with a sl st. (50)
This is what you should have so far. See how the loop is in the middle? Make sure that is where your loop is.
We want to join grey here. There are two ways you can do this.
- Finish off and re join the grey yarn in the middle stitch
- When you go to join the round with a sl st, instead of pulling through the white, pull through the grey and continue with the next round. Pick up white again when you get to round 8.

Round 7: with second colour (grey), ch 1, sc around. Join to first sc with a sl st and finish off.
Re join white using one of the above methods.
Round 8: Ch 1, sc around. Join to first sc with a sl st. Finish off.
Mark the middle stitch at the back with a stitch marker. If you find your rows have moved don't panic, fold the boot in half and find the middle stitch that way.
Count from (including) the stitch marker 19 stitches towards the front on either side and mark with a stitch marker.
Toe:
You should have 15 stitches for the front of the shoe. Start and finish where you placed your markers.
Join white in place marked by first stitch marker
Working in back loops only to make the ridge in the front.
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1, dc in next stitch, dc2tog 4 times, dc3tog, dc in next, sc in next.
Row 2: Ch 2, dc in next st, dc2tog 3 times, dc in last st. (6 dc)
Finish off with white
Tongue:
Join grey in the stitch shown
Row 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in same stitch as ch 1, and in next 4. 2 sc in last stitch, turn (8 sc)
Row 2-10: Ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch 1, sc across (8 sc)
Sides: with grey
Working in back loop only, join in stitch shown with orange marker.
It is the same stitch that the toe is in.
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch 1 and in next 36. (37 sc) (end in same stitch toe is in)
Now working in both loops
Row 2-3: Ch 1, turn. Sc in same stitch as ch 1 and in next 36. (37 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog twice, sc in next 29, sc2tog twice. (33 sc)
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 12, sc2tog, sc in nxt st, sc2tog, sc in nxt 12, sc2tog. (29 sc)
Row 6-7: Ch 1, turn. Sc across. (29 sc)
Row 8: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog, sc in next 10, sc2tog, sc, sc2tog, sc in next 10, sc2tog. (25 sc)
Row 9-10: Ch 1, sc across. Finish off. (25 sc)
Laces: make 2
Ch 90, finish off.
Lace boots as shown in pic.
Just pull through stitches at the end of row 1, row 4 and row 8. It is easier to weave in the ends once you have pulled through the laces.

ReplyDeleteIf you look down the bottom of the post you will see a print friendly button which means you can print, turn into a pdf or email to someone. You will also find you can delete the parts you don't want to shorten the pattern. This will save paper and ink if you delete the pictures you don't need.

DeleteIn the instructions to make the toe, there aren't enough stitches to use all the 15 stitches left for the toe from the sole.

DeleteDo you have 13 stitches left? If so you are forgetting to put the stitches in the same place as the markers. This will give you 15. You will have two stitches in the marker spaces, one for the back and one for the toe part.

I have 15 stitches, but according to the first row I'm supposed to do: Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1(1 stitch), dc in next stitch(2 stitches), dc2tog 4 times(6 stitches), dc3tog (7stitches), dc in next(8 stitches), sc in next (9 stitches used). That gives me a 6 stitch gap :(

ReplyDeleteThe entire 2nd round of the sole should be done in hdc. I just realised I had 2 sc stitches at the end that should have been hdc. I have fixed it now. So it should make sense. Let me know if it still needs adjusting. I appreciate having mistakes pointed out as the changes make it easier for the next person making them :)
