Under The Sea Blanket

I am super excited about my latest blanket. All the appliques are designed around the theme Under the Sea.

I really enjoyed making this blanket. Some of the appliques were more challenging than others but that's one of the things I love. With crochet you can create so many shapes, all that is holding you back is your imagination.

The pattern for the main blanket is once again free, so you can pick appliques that suit. Some people have used one or two appliques throughout an entire blanket, just changing the colours. These blankets are still really effective.

Measurements:

• Each block without border should measure 10.5 x 12 inches
• Each block with border should measure 11.5 x 13 inches.

The pattern for the blocks are as follows:

Using a 5.50 mm hook and dk/8 ply yarn

The yarn I have chosen to use is:

Gauge: 7 hdc and 5 rows = 2 inches

Note: Ch 2 counts as a hdc

Pattern:

Blocks  

Make 4 turquoise, 4 beige and 4 blue.

Row 1: Ch 36, hdc in 3rd ch from the hook and across. (35 hdc)

Row 2-30: Ch 2, turn. Hdc across. (35 hdc)

Ch 1, turn. 3 sc into the corner, sc in next 33 st, 3 sc into the corner, place 36 sc evenly down the side of the block, 3 sc into the corner, sc in next 33, 3 sc into the corner, 36 sc evenly back up the side. Join to first sc with a sl st. Finish off and weave in ends.

Border For Each Block (with Navy)

Join yarn in a corner stitch, ch 2, 2 hdc into the same space. Hdc in each stitch until corner. When you reach the corner stitch place 3 hdc into the stitch. Continue to hdc in each stitch around placing 3 hdc in each corner. Join to top of ch 2 with a sl st and finish off.

Joining blocks together:

Border for the entire blanket:

• When changing colours for each round, join the new yarn in the middle stitch in the top right corner.
• Try to keep the stitch counts on the top the same as the bottom and the right side the same as the left side.

Round 1: Navy - Ch 2, 5 hdc into the same st as ch 2, hdc evenly across to the next corner, 6 hdc into the corner, hdc evenly down the left side of the blanket, 6 hdc into the corner, hdc evenly across the bottom of the blanket, 6 hdc into the corner, hdc evenly up the right side of the blanket. Join to the top of the beginning ch 2 with a sl st. Finish off with Navy.

Round 2: Blue -  Ch 1, 3 sc into the same st as ch 1, sc evenly across to the next corner, 3 sc into the corner, sc evenly down the left side of the blanket, 3 sc into the corner, sc evenly across the bottom of the blanket, 3 sc into the corner, sc evenly up the right side of the blanket. Join to the top of the first sc with a sl st. Finish off with blue.

Round 3: Turquoise - Same as round 2. Finish off with turquoise.
Round 4: Beige - Same as round 2. Finish off with beige.

Round 5: Navy - Ch 2, 2 hdc into the same st as ch 2, hdc evenly across to the next corner, 3 hdc into the corner, hdc evenly down the left side of the blanket, 3 hdc into the corner, hdc evenly across the bottom of the blanket, 3 hdc into the corner, hdc evenly up the right side of the blanket. Join to the top of the beginning ch 2 with a sl st. Finish off with Navy.

Weave in all ends.

 All the base patterns are FREE. This allows you to pick which design best suits you. All the appliques will fit on the blocks. If in doubt, or you want to use your own block, each pattern will list the finished measurements of the appliques. C2C squares give a really nice textured background to the appliques.
