Crochet Ram Horn Beanie (Maenad Beanie)

Knook Baby Value Pack

I loved making this hat for Beanie Fest 2015. It's inspired by the Maenad headdresses. So you could call it a Maenad Beanie.

If you would like to create your own you will need:

  • Super Bulky yarn for the main hat
  • A crochet pattern for the hat if you are unable to freehand it.
  • 4 mm crochet hook for the horns.
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook for the flowers
  • DK/8ply yarn for the flowers, horns and to add colour to the dreads
  • Wool roving or wool yarn for the dreads.
  • Beads
  • Glue Gun
  • Thread
  • Yarn needle to weave in ends and a normal needle that will fit through your chosen beads

Underneath everything you will find a basic hdc beanie. I used bulky yarn but you could use any basic beanie pattern for the base.

The flowers are different sized roses. I free handed/crocheted them but you can find patterns for roses here:

http://www.knotyournanascrochet.com/2013/12/simple-crochet-roses-3-sizes.html

I would use a combination of the medium and small roses. Each rose has 3 small purple beads in the centre.

For the horns I have written out a basic pattern. You will want to work in a spiral and mark the first stitch of each round. Some rounds fall short on the repeat. E.g - Round 2 you will finish the round with 2 sc.

Horns are made holding two strands of DK/8ply

Right Horn:

Starting with a magic circle:

1.6 sc into the circle
2. *2 sc into the next st, sc into the next st* Repeat around = 9 sc
3. *2 sc into the next st, sc into the next st* Repeat around = 14 sc
4. Sc in each st around = 14 sc
5. Sc in each st around = 14 sc
6. Sc in each st around = 14 sc
7.*2 sc into the next st, sc into the next st* Repeat around = 21 sc
8. Sc in each st around = 21 sc
9. 5 sc, 10 dc, 6 sc = 21 st
10. 5 sc, 10 dc, 6 sc = 21 st
11. Sc in each st around = 21 sc
12. 5 sc,10 dc, 6 sc = 21 st
13. 5 sc, 10 dc, 6 sc = 21 st
14. 6 sc, 10 dc, 5 c = 21 st
15. 7 sc, 10 dc, 4 sc = 21 st
16. 7 sc, 10 dc, 4 sc = 21 st
17. *2 sc into the next st, sc in the next 2 sts* Repeat around = 28
18. 9 sc, 12 dc, 7 sc = 28 st
19. 10 sc, 12 dc, 6 sc = 28 st
20. 11 sc, 12 dc, 5 sc = 28 st
21. 12 sc, 12 dc, 4 sc = 28 st
22. 13 sc, 12 dc, 3 sc = 28 st
23. 15 sc, 13dc = 28 st
24. 3 dc, 15 sc, 10 dc = 28 st
25. 3 dc, 15 sc, 10 dc = 28 st
26. 3 dc, 15 sc, 10 dc = 28 st
27. 3 dc, 15 sc, 10 dc = 28 st
28. 3 dc, 15 sc, 10 dc = 28 st

Finish off leaving a tail for sewing. Stuff.

Left Horn:

 Starting with a magic circle:

9. 6 sc, 10 dc, 5 sc = 21 st
10. 6 sc, 10 dc, 5 sc = 21 st
11. Sc in each st around = 21 sc
12. 6 sc,10 dc, 5 sc = 21 st
13. 6 sc, 10 dc, 5 sc = 21 st
14. 5 sc, 10 dc, 6 c = 21 st
15. 4 sc, 10 dc, 7 sc = 21 st
16. 4 sc, 10 dc, 7 sc = 21 st
17. *2 sc into the next st, sc in the next 2 sts* Repeat around = 28
18. 7 sc, 12 dc, 9 sc = 28 st
19. 6 sc, 12 dc, 10 sc = 28 st
20. 5 sc, 12 dc, 11 sc = 28 st
21. 4 sc, 12 dc, 12 sc = 28 st
22. 3 sc, 12 dc, 13 sc = 28 st
23. 13dc, 15 sc = 28 st
24. 10 dc, 15 sc, 3 dc = 28 st
25. 10 dc, 15 sc, 3 dc = 28 st
26. 10 dc, 15 sc, 3 dc = 28 st
27. 10 dc, 15 sc, 3 dc = 28 st
28. 10 dc, 15 sc, 3 dc = 28 st

Finish off leaving a tail for sewing, Stuff.

If you want to shape your horns differently all you really need to know is the sc create the inside curve and the dc create the outside curve,

For the dreads I braided wool roving and put through a hot wash in the washing machine. I added two strands of purple acrylic to the braids to incorporate some colour. Tie both ends of the braids with scrap yarn to stop them coming undone. You can cut this off later. You will want to put the dreads in a pillow case and tie the end.

Because this is more of an art piece than an actual beanie that would be worn I used hot glue to attach the braids. If you were planning on it being worn regularly you would want to stitch the dreads to the beanie securely. I then took a needle and thread and stitched beads onto the dreads randomly.
