My kids love playing dress ups and this royal cape is great for that. It is pictured here on an average size 4 year old with room to spare so at a guess it should fit up to a 6 year old with just adjusting the length of the cape. It also fits okay on my 3 year old. If in doubt test the first row around the neck of the child you are making in for.

This pattern has not been tested so if you find any mistakes or have trouble with anything please leave a comment below or email me at knotyournanascrochet@gmail.com so I can help and fix it for the next person.
Materials:
- 5.5mm crochet hook (or hook needed to match gauge below)
- 8 ply/dk yarn (I find a light worsted weight/10 ply yarn can often be substituted provided you match gauge) I used a maroon yarn because it was the closest colour I could find in my small town but I think her coat is more a dark pink. I used about 230 grams of maroon and less than 50 of the black.
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Tape Measure
Gauge: 5 rows x 7 stitches in 2 inches done in hdc.
Pattern:
Note: when working into the beginning ch only go through one loop. Some people go through two and this will make it harder to attach the cape part.
Collar: with maroon
Row 1: Ch 61, hdc into the 3rd ch from the hook and each ch across (60 hdc)
Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Hdc into the same st as ch 2, hdc in next 5 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 5 st* Repeat between * across. (70 hdc)
Row 3: Ch 2, turn. Hdc into the same st as ch 2, hdc in next 6 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 6 st* Repeat between * across. (80 hdc)
Row 4: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across. (80hdc)
Row 5: Ch 2, turn. Hdc into the same st as ch 2, hdc in next 7 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 7 st* Repeat between * across. (90 hdc)
Row 6: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across. (90 hdc)
Row 7: Ch 2, turn. Hdc into the same st as ch 2, hdc in next 8 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 8 st* Repeat between * across. (100 hdc)
Row 8-10: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across. (100 hdc)
Finish off
Along the collar, count 16 stitches in from each end and mark with a stitch marker.
With right side facing you, join yarn in back loop of the stitch marker on your right.
The middle picture in collage above shows the loop you will be working into. Turn your work around so this loop is on the back and you will be working down into it. The last picture shows the first row of the cape complete with the front loop left unworked for the Upper Collar.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st as ch 2, hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st* Repeat between * around. (45 hdc)
Row 3: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across. (45 hdc)
Row 4: Ch 2, turn. Hdc into the same st as ch 2, hdc in next 8 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 8 st* Repeat between * across. (50 hdc)
Row 5: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across. (50 hdc)
Row 6: Ch 2, turn. Hdc into the same st as ch 2, hdc in next 9 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 9 st* Repeat between * across. (55 hdc)
Row 7: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across. (55 hdc)
Row 8: Ch 2, turn. Hdc into the same st as ch 2, hdc in next 10 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 10 st* Repeat between * across. (60 hdc)
Row 9-15: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across. (60 hdc)
Row 16: Ch 2, turn. Hdc into the same st as ch 2, hdc in next 11 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 11 st* Repeat between * across. (65 hdc)
Row 17: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across. (65 hdc)
Row 18: Ch 2, turn. Hdc into the same st as ch 2, hdc in next 12 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 12 st* Repeat between * across. (70 hdc)
Row 19-58: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across. (70 hdc)
Finish off.
Starting in stitch shown under collar, ch 1, sc evenly in each stitch around. Finish on other side underneath collar. Place 3 sc in each corner to make the turn.
Finish off.
Upper Collar:
Now we want to join the maroon in the stitch shown in the left hand picture.
Row 1: Ch 1, sc along short edge, sc in first 15 stitches, you will now be at the part where we joined the cape. There should still be one loop left to crochet through, sc in the next 30 loops, sc in last 15 stitches, sc down short edge. Finish off with maroon. (60 sc)
Row 2: Join black in stitch shown in right hand picture. Ch 2, hdc in each stitch across. Finish off with black. (60 hdc)
Row 3: Join maroon in top of beginning ch 2 from previous row. Ch 1, sc into the same st as ch 1 and in each st across. Finish off with maroon. (60 sc)
Pom Pom Edging: with black
Join black yarn in stitch shown.
Ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1, sc in next st, *ch 6, 5 dc into 4th ch from the hook. Pull loop on your hook up, remove hook from loop and place in top of first dc from front to back. Grab the loop with your hook and pull through to tighten cluster and form a pom pom shape. Sc back down ch (2 ch), sc in next 3 stitches.* Repeat between * across ending with 2 sc.
Finish off.
Weave in all ends.
I attached button by just pushing through the stitches but another option would be to create a ch loop to hook around the button.

I love this pattern. Do you mind if I sell items I make from this pattern in my etsy store? I would of course include a link back to here in the listing to give you credit for the pattern.
ReplyDeleteHey thanks :) Feel free to sell any item's made from my patterns.
DeleteHow much yarn is needed for the hats and the Elsa and Anna capes?
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI love the cape so far, however I am having trouble understanding the instructions for the upper cape. What am I connecting these stitches to, and what is it doing? What color am I using? Thank you,
Katie
Thankyou so much for this cape pattern, the instructions were easy to follow and the cape came out beautifully. I made one for my niece for her birthday to go with her Frozen outfits and she loved it, I'm a happy aunty :-)
