Christmas Coasters


I wrote this pattern back in 2012 but ended up unpublishing it. I just found it again the other day while browsing my computer and since it is coming up to Christmas I thought some of you might like the chance to make them. I gave them as gifts and the recipients loved them. Such a cute, festive spot to place your cups.

Materials:

·        4.50 mm crochet hook
·        Yarn – DK 8 ply in red, black, light brown, dark brown, white, black, orange, yellow and green.
·        Yarn needle.
·        Scissors.
·        Black felt for eyes


Main coaster for all characters:

Snowman – white
Santa – red
Elf – green
Reindeer and gingerbread man – Light brown

Ch 2 counts as beginning hdc. Ch 2 at start of each round

Round 1: Starting with a magic circle, ch 2, 11 hdc into the circle Join to top of ch 2 with a sl st. (12)
Round 2: 2 hdc in each stitch. (24)
Round 3: 2 hdc in first stitch, 1 hdc in next around. (36)
Round 4: 2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next 2 stitches (48)
Round 5: 2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next 3 stitches. (60)

Finish off

Heads:

Reindeer and gingerbread man – Light Brown

Do not join rounds,

Round 1: Starting with the magic circle ch 1, 6 sc into the circle.
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12)
Round 3: 2 sc in first stitch, sc in next (18)
Round 4- 7: sc around
Round 8: sc2tog, sc around (12)

Embroider face on ginger bread man and stuff. I used the Embroidery chain stitch for the mouth. http://www.needlenthread.com/2006/10/embroidery-stitch-video-tutorial-chain.html  

For reindeer - Cut eyes out of felt and glue into place, sew on nose and stuff.
(nose – 3 sc in a magic circle with red, join with sl st and finish off.

Round 9: sc2tog around (6)

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing. Stitch bottom closed and attach to coaster.

Reindeer antlers – I used the antlers from this pattern http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa121899.htm

Santa – Start with light brown, change to white end of row 7, change to red end of row 8. 3 sc in a magic circle for pom pom,

Elf – Start with light brown, change to green end of row 7,
Ears – 3 sc in magic circle, join.

Round 1: Starting with the magic circle ch 1, 6 sc into the circle.
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12)
Round 3: 2 sc in first stitch, sc in next (18)
Round 4- 7: sc around

Round 8: sc2tog, sc around (12)

Stuff and embroider faces here.

Round 9: sc 2tog, sc around (8)
Round 10: sc around
Round 11: sc2tog, sc around (5)
Round 12: sc around
Round 13: sc2tog


Santa’s beard.

Ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in next st, 2 sc in next  2, sc in nxt 2.

Ch 1, turn. Sc across

LEGS AND ARMS

Gingerbread man and reindeer - make 8 light brown
Santa and elfs legs – make 4 black
Santa arms – Start with light brown and change to red end of round 2
Elf arms– Start with light brown and change to green end of round 2

Round 1: starting with a magic circle, 6 sc
Round 2: 2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next.
Round 3-6: sc around
Round 7: sc2tog, sc around


Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff and stitch bottom closed and attach to coaster.
