Now is where you want to line the bag. (excuse the bad pictures). Do not cut your yarn. Either pull up a large loop or place a stitch marker into the loop to stop your stitches coming undone.
Right now we want to work on the flap for the handles.
Row 1: Ch 1, Sc in same st as ch 1. Sc in each hole as shown above (every 2nd row). Sc in last st. I ended up with 28 sc.
Row 2-12: Ch 1, turn. Sc in same st as ch 1 and in each st across. (28 sc)
This should have gathered the bag in. Finish off. Join yarn on the other side of the bag and repeat rows 1-12.
Now working short sides.
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in the end of each row, sc in the next 30 stitches. Sc in the end of each row. (54 sc)
Row 2-4: Ch 1, turn. Sc in same st as ch 1 and in each st across. (54 sc)
Finish off. Join the yarn on the other side and repeat rows 1-4.
Now to sew the handles in all you need to do is fold the flap over the handle and sew it down on the inside.
I hope you enjoy making this bag and I would love to see pictures. You can either post them on Facebook or as a project on Ravelry

Fold material in half and cut around the bag. Don't cut around the bottom of the bag. |
Pin lining into bag |
Make gathers/pleats as you go on the short sides. |
I used a sewing machine to sew my lining in but futuregirl has a great tutorial on how to hand sew a lining http://www.futuregirl.com/craft_blog/2008/10/tutorial-sew-a-lining-into-a-crocheted-bag.aspx |

My attempt at gathers/pleats |
See the holes along the top? These are where you want to single crochet into when making the flap to fold over the handles. |

Super cute!! Thanks for posting!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the pattern!! I am just getting ready to try a "springy-colored" bag, and it may be this one in a variegated yarn!!!
ReplyDeleteHello, My name is Michelle and I'm in the US. Love the Crochet Fat Bag! Found it on Ravelry. One question - how much yarn does it take to make this? I've converted the yarn weight, which works out to a #3 weight (more or less) and have chosen Patons DK Superwash yarn but couldn't find a quantity of how much I need. I'm at lowridersrule@gmail.com. Love that you're in New Zealand! Beautiful place! Thanks for your help!
ReplyDeleteHi there, at an estimate I think I used 190 grams, I just weighted what I had left and it was about 210 grams. 1076 meters in a 400 gram ball so I would make sure you had at least 550 meters of yarn to be safe.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for that info. It was a huge help factoring that last missing piece of "how much yarn?" Already have an eye on a beautiful navy that I've been wanting to try. Excited now that I can!
DeleteLOVE this bag! You have GOT to put a pin button on this post. It would so totally get pinned like a million times. Really :) I pinned it anyway lol.
ReplyDeleteHello! does the pattern count the "ch2" as part of the total number of hdc for the row?
ReplyDeleteHello, yes it does count the ch 2 as part of the total hdc
DeleteTHANK YOU!!! I cannot wait to finish the bag :) I really appreciate your reply.
DeleteLove this pattern. I have a question about rows 20 and 21. You used the row numbers twice. Row 22 is actually row 24. Is it 32 rows before I start to decrease or should I continue to row 34? Thanks for your help.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I will go and fix that but you should start decreasing on row 33. If you added in the other two rows it would only make the bag a little longer.
DeleteLove this bag pattern and thanks for the liner instructions too!

If one keeps increasing on rows 24-32, at the end oaf row 32 there will be 90 stitches. Then on row 33 you decrease 4 stitches, you should have 86 stitches, yet your instructions indicate 70 stitches. Are rows 24-32 supposed to be rows without increasing? You instructions don't indicate that. Your instruction is to repeat rows 20-21, which show increases. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHi there,
DeleteThanks for picking up on that. It should be rows 22-23 that you alternate.
Hello!
ReplyDeleteThe pattern says to start with 31 and do hdcs from the third chain from the hook (chain 29) AND the following nine chains. That brings us to chain 19 but then there are twenty more stitches to make. I can't make the math work.
Also when we start doing the crossed hdcs, there are 34 hdcs to work from. That would give us an even number, so 17 crossed hdcs. How do we get 16 crosses and then one hdc at the end? Are we supposed to count the first chain 2 as an hdc and actually SKIP the first hdc on the previous row completely?
Thanks!
Is there a certain kind of fabric for the lining, and how much do I need?
