Australian Animals Blanket

Sometimes I wonder if I am crazy :S

I have officially started another blanket. When it's completed that will make it a total of 10 applique blankets I have completed.

I still have so many ideas...... Nursery Rhymes, Pirates, Princesses, Dogs and Cats....

This one in particular has an Australian Animal theme. I have gained so much knowledge researching the animals included. So far I have made:

I have a love hate relationship with this blanket. So many hours of work went into it, seriously, take a look at the amount of colour changes in the shield alone. But it was totally worth it. just look at the end result. I am sure the recipient will have a huge smile on his face when he opens it.

Background Noise

What do you like to listen to while you crochet or complete other tasks. It certainly makes housework a lot more enjoyable when you have something interesting to listen to.

Crochet Applique Base Blankets

Something great about my crochet applique designs is they can be mixed and matched between bases or used individually. Often I will browse through the Ravelry projects for each blanket to see everyone's creations. It's amazing the different combinations that are used.

I have also noticed an increase in the single appliques that are purchased. I would love to see what everyone is using them for. Share a photo over on my Facebook Page or in the Group.

All the base patterns are free, I have included each base as a download with the corresponding eBook but here is a list of all the different base patterns and a link to each.

Robin Applique

New Zealand Robins are small birds, about the size of a Sparrow. The males are dark grey and the females are a light brown. So I guess this little guy is a male :)

Takahe Applique

The Takahe is a flightless New Zealand bird and is classified as an endangered species. You can read more about the Takahe here: http://www.doc.govt.nz/takahe

Crochet New Zealand Birds Blanket

Another set of appliques are in the works. I have finished creating them all as the blankets were for an order and now it is time to write out all the patterns and get them tested. The links will be added as the patterns are released on Ravelry. Keep an eye on this space.

Morepork Applique

The Morepork is New Zealand's only surviving owl and has a very distinctive 'more-pork' call. As a child we used to climb trees in the evenings and copy the call. 

In Maori tradition the Morepork is seen as a watchful guardian. The 'more-pork' call is thought to be a good sign, whereas the high pitched yelp call was thought to be a warning that there would be bad news coming.

Fantail Applique

Fantails are wonderful birds to watch. They have fly around quite energetically, flitting here and there. I wanted to capture it's distinct fanned tail in this applique.

I also find the Maori meaning behind this bird interesting. The Fantail (Piwakawaka) is a messenger, bringing death or news of death from the gods. My sister and I always used to get concerned when one would fly inside. Thankfully it never amounted to anything.

Kiwi Applique

The Kiwi is the national symbol here in New Zealand so of course he had to be included in this collection of New Zealand Bird Appliques.

Star Wars C2C Afgahn

If you have following me for a while you will know that my son is a massive Star Wars fan. His 7th birthday is next month and I have decided to make him his own Star Wars Afghan to replace the Boys Will Be Boys Blanket we designed together a few years ago.

 I got him to sit down and write out a list of the characters/items he wanted included.

He listed 15, but honestly these C2C squares were taking forever and 6 turned out to be plenty to create a single bed throw blanket.
